Wednesday, December 10th, 2008OWNER: The Nueva School
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER: Lake Street
ARCHITECT: Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects
PROJECT SIZE: 56,000 square feet
CONSTRUCTION VALUE: $22.3 Million
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS: 24,000 square feet of new construction that includes a new library, student center and classroom building and historical renovation of the 32,000 square foot Crocker Mansion on a 33-acre campus. The project achieved a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
One of the driving concepts behind this project is the integration of sustainable features. The project includes living roofs that provide new habitat for an endangered native butterfly species, existing Cypress trees were milled and reused as building screens and 30 KW photovoltaic array.
This integrated design approach creates cost-effective, high-performance learning environments that teach students about the virtues of environmental stewardship on a daily basis. The design achieved 65% less energy and 50% less water than a typical school facility in the United States.
The new buildings are simple and elegant, blending harmoniously with the land and the diverse architectural styles of the campus. This design and the sustainable feature have been recognized nationally with many awards that include the following:
- LEED Gold Certification U.S. Green Building Council
- National AIA Top Ten Green Project
- Award of Excellence, National AIA Educational Facility Design Awards
- AIASF Energy & Sustainability Honor Award
- 2008 Sustainable San Mateo County Green Building Award
